The Dominican Republic team is ready and very excited about competing in the WUGC! Under the distant tutelage of our team Capitan, who currently resides in NY, we have been training aggressively in a dirt pitch along-side the national track and field team, a group of 40-something rugby aficionados and a rag-tag flag football squad that drinks two cases of beer during practice. Training with the football and rugby guys is not really a problem, but let me tell you that training with javelin throwers really adds a whole new element to the vertical stack.
Recently, we had a very successful tournament that was highlighted by a dog grooming show, which reminds me that I did not see any sort of animal husbandry event on the WUGC calendar…quite strange indeed. It must be cultural.
This week we will be doing a fundraiser to try to get enough money for us to fly all the way to Vancouver. As of right now, half of our team plans to land in Portland Oregon, pile into a $19/day sub-compact rental car and with a little luck, successfully cross the border into Canada. Normally we would not mind this, but we recently learned that drinking and driving is not legal in the US. Unfortunately, these are always lessons you learn the hard way.
Anyway, we are looking forward to the competition, camaraderie, meeting new friends, living a real college dorm experience, but mostly getting out of the Dominican Republic during hurricane season.
See everyone in Vancouver!
